Attacks on shipping in the Red Sea in recent years have pushed a growing share of world merchant traffic to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, revitalising ports such as Durban and Cape Town and placing South Africa once again at the heart of global trade geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This panel explores this transformation of the Cape route from an emergency alternative into a structural component of the new global maritime economy, and examines the role South Africa \u2014 a leading power on the African continent and a natural bridge between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean \u2014 can play in this scenario.
