Giorgio Starace (Viterbo, 23 February 1959) is an Italian diplomat, Ambassador of Italy to Russia from 1 October 2021 to 14 July 2024. Biography He attended the 1975-77 course at the “Nunziatella” Military School in Naples. In 1982 he graduated in Political Economy from Bocconi University. He began his diplomatic career with a specialization in trade in 1985 in the General Directorate for Economic Affairs responsible for relations with the European Economic Community, later joining the coordination secretariat (1987). In 1988 he assumed the role of second commercial secretary in Guatemala where he was later appointed first commercial secretary (1990). In 1992 he was transferred to Beijing, China, with the role of first secretary in the political sector, where he was subsequently promoted to legation counselor (1995). In 1995 he returned to Rome with a role in coordinating the Italian Presidency of the European Union at the Directorate General for Economic Affairs. In 1996 he was appointed counselor for International Affairs of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Resources at the Cabinet of Ministers Michele Pinto and later Paolo De Castro, Luca Zaia and Giancarlo Galan. In this role he took part in the negotiations on the Community agricultural policies linked to the Agenda 2000 programme of the European Union.[2]In 1999 he was transferred to New York, United States of America as head of the press office at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the UN.
