Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the shortcomings of pre-existing governance models in every region of the world and the need to move to a public health crisis management model through health data. Software dedicated to data analysis management would bring vital benefits but only on the condition that key players – scientists, governments and pharmaceutical industries – exchange, globally, data on the genetic sequences of pathogens as they are generated during epidemics. Why, then, is this valuable resource often held back by stakeholders – hampering the international response and potentially putting human lives at risk?
