ECFR Rome Director and Senior Policy Fellow
Arturo Varvelli is Head of the Rome Office and Senior Policy Fellow for the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), and Senior Associate Fellow at ISPI. He also works as a scholar on topics such as Italian-Libyan relations, Libyan internal and foreign policy, Italian foreign policy in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, jihadist groups in North Africa, having published both books and articles on these topics. Dr. Varvelli is also Professor of Middle Eastern History and Institutions at the IULM University of Milan and Visiting Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy (EFD) in Brussels. In 2006 he completed a PhD. in International History at the University of Milan, where he worked as a professor of History of International Relations. In 2007 he was postdoc. fellow at the CRT Foundation in Turin.
He has served in research projects commissioned by the study office of the Italian House of Representatives and the Italian Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Parliament and the Commission. In 2015 he was chosen by the US State Department to participate in the “” International Visitor Leadership Program “”. Varvelli is also regularly interviewed on foreign affairs issues by national and international networks.
