Michele Valensise (Polistena, April 3, 1952) is an Italian diplomat, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2016. Ambassador of rank.

Director of Astaldi from 2016, of which he was vice chairman from 2016 to 2020. Director of Tim S.p.A from 2018, of which he was chairman in 2019, in the transition from Fulvio Conti to Salvatore Rossi.

Michele Valensise graduated in law from the University of Rome and, in 1975, following a public competition, he entered the diplomatic career. He was initially assigned to the Directorate of Economic Affairs, then, in 1978, he was transferred to the Italian Embassy in Brasilia.

In 1981, Valensise was in Bonn, at the Italian embassy to the German Federal Republic; from 1984 to 1987, during the civil war in Lebanon, he was councilor in Beirut, with vicarious functions as head of mission. Then Head of the Secretariat of the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Susanna Agnelli (1987-1991).

Since 1991 he has been First Counselor in Brussels, at the Italian Permanent Representation to the European Union.

In 1997, at the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he is in Sarajevo, with the post of Ambassador. In 1999 he returned to the Farnesina, first as head of the Office for relations with Parliament, in the Cabinet of Minister Lamberto Dini, and then as head of the Cabinet.

From 2001 to 2004 he was Head of the Press and Information Service at the Farnesina and spokesperson for foreign ministers Renato Ruggiero, Silvio Berlusconi (interim) and Franco Frattini. From 2004 to 2009, Valensise was Ambassador of Italy to Brazil and, between 2009 and 2012, he was Ambassador of Italy to Berlin.

On 29 May 2012, Michele Valensise was appointed Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 4 March 2016, when he decided to leave the office and the Ministry itself, to undertake new professional experiences.

On November 18, 2016 on the joint proposal of the Italian and German governments, Valensise was elected President of the Italian-German Center for European Dialogue Villa Vigoni by the institution’s shareholders’ meeting. In November 2020, on a new proposal from the Italian and German governments, he is confirmed as the Presidency of the Center.

He is a member of the Italy USA Foundation.
