Italy offers Europe a cooperation model in which all partners must be able to grow and improve. The objective of our country, but also of the entire European Union, is to achieve total autonomy from supply of Russian gas, and then progressively grow as an energy distribution hub from North Africa to the heart of European Union. But there is not only energy in the hottest political issues: the other is that of flow management migratory. What are the policies and actions that will be put in place to implement the so-called “Mattei Plan” in Africa and the Mediterranean? The plan, inspired by Eni founder Enrico Mattei, involves Italy’s commitment in signing a series of agreements with the countries of the African continent, mainly focused on energy. The objective is to establish equal agreements with countries that can play a fundamental role in Italian and European energy market. There are many issues related to the topic: from the sphere of influence in continent to security in the Mediterranean. The plan calls for these collaboration agreements to be extended also to other African countries, in order to broaden the sphere of influence with possible geopolitical implications also impact on other issues, such as migration.
This will be discussed with a view to identifying possible, predictable and desirable scenarios during the session XIV Festival of Diplomacy which will be held from 10 to 12 on 20 October 2023 at the Roman headquarters of the BonelliErede Law Firm in via Vittoria Colonna n.39
