Twice Czech foreign minister in caretaker governments. He is also considered among the personalities closest to the current President of the Republic, Miloš Zeman.
The new diplomat graduated from Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. In his professional profile he was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; at the Institute of International Relations in Prague; director of the Department for the United Nations and other international organizations; deputy head of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Vienna; deputy director at the EU and Western Europe Department, European correspondent, political director; deputy minister and secretary of state for European affairs; Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the EU, Ambassador, Brussels; deputy minister and then minister of Foreign Affairs; Supervisory Board, ČEZ; again Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic; consultancy for the Czech Republic, New Silk Road Institute; deputy minister at the Ministry of Justice; deputy minister, MAE of the Czech Republic and since last December designated ambassador of the Czech Republic to Italy.
