Allargamento della UE: referendum sull’adesione della Moldova

Presidential elections and a constitutional referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union will be held on 20 October in the Republic of Moldova. The referendum initiated by President Maia Sandu provides for the completion of the Constitution with two new paragraphs, which reconfirm the European identity of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the country’s European path.

As has already happened in European countries in the context of the elections for the European Parliament, foreign-funded media, web pages and social media accounts of dubious identity spread narratives aimed at discrediting the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union and the image of a European Union and, in general, of a West in economic and moral decline, at the same time fueling nostalgia for the Soviet past.

The political particularities of the separatist region Transnistria and the Gagausia Autonomous Region make the nuances of the informational picture even darker. Instead, the two decades of prosperity and peace that EU membership has brought to the Baltic countries, also former Soviet republics, are capable of bringing confidence and optimism to Chișinău too.
