He is an independent Italian politician and professor of law who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Giuseppe Conte’s first cabinet from June 1, 2018 to September 5, 2019.
He was also President-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe during the Italian Presidency of the organization in 2018.
Previously he was Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission (2002-2005) and Italian Minister of European Affairs in the Monti e Letta Cabinet from November 2011 to February 2014.
