Africa in the International System. Geopolitical Competition, Multilateralism and the Rule of Law

Africa is increasingly at the heart of global dynamics. In a multipolar world, the continent is the focus of growing geopolitical competition among powers such as China, Russia, the United States, the European Union, India, and Turkey, drawn by its natural resources, strategic position, and demographic potential. At the same time, Africa is striving to assert itself as an autonomous actor in the international system, strengthening multilateralism through the African Union, the AfCFTA, and a more active presence in global forums such as the G20 and climate conferences. However, serious internal challenges remain regarding the rule of law: political instability, military coups, corruption, and weak institutions continue to undermine democratic progress. Balancing national sovereignty, effective governance, and international cooperation will be key to the continent’s future. Africa is no longer merely a battleground—it seeks to become a key player in shaping the global order.
