Martyrs and Heroes

The program for the 16th edition of the Festival of Diplomacy will include a meeting on the theme of “Martyrs and Heroes”; figures depicted by artists over the centuries will be explained by art critic and historian Vittorio Maria De Bonis, who will give a lecture on the subject to guests.

The representation of martyrs and heroes has spanned centuries of art history, embodying the ideals, values, and social tensions of each era. Through paintings, sculptures, monuments, and contemporary works, these symbolic figures tell stories of sacrifice, courage, faith, and the struggle for justice, reflecting the cultural and spiritual transformations of societies.

This initiative aims to explore how artists from different eras and traditions have interpreted and represented martyrs and heroes, analyzing the symbolic meaning and emotional impact of these works. From classical antiquity to the Renaissance, from the Baroque to the contemporary, the exhibition highlights the many facets of the concept of heroism and martyrdom and their role in the construction of collective identity.

Through contributions from art historians, curators, and critics, the project aims to stimulate reflection on the communicative power of art in recounting sacrifice and example, inviting us to rediscover the universal value of these figures as models of inspiration and memory.
