The challenges of food security, sustainable agricultural development and international cooperation are deeply rooted in a history that helped shape the post-war multilateral system. Understanding these origins also means reflecting on the role that international organisations continue to play in tackling the major global challenges of our time.

These are the themes at the heart of the book *The Origins of the FAO. The Relations between the International Institute of Agriculture and the League of Nations’ by Luciano Tosi, which traces the historical, political and diplomatic path that led to the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. Through an in-depth reconstruction of its origins, the book offers a framework for understanding the international context that made possible the creation of one of the key institutions of the UN system.

Building on the insights offered by the book, representatives from the academic, institutional and business worlds will discuss the historical significance of the FAO’s legacy and its relevance today, in a context marked by growing geopolitical tensions, climate change and new challenges to global food security.
