Martyrs and Heroes in the History of Art

The depiction of martyrs and heroes has spanned centuries of art history, embodying ideals, values, and social tensions from every era. Through paintings, sculptures, monuments and contemporary works, these symbolic figures tell stories of sacrifice, courage, faith and the struggle for justice, reflecting the cultural and spiritual transformations of societies.
This initiative aims to explore how artists from different eras and traditions have interpreted and represented martyrs and heroes, analyzing the symbolic meaning and emotional impact of these works. From classicism to the Renaissance, from the Baroque to the contemporary, the route highlights the many facets of the concept of heroism and martyrdom, and their role in the construction of collective identity.
Through interventions by art historians, curators and critics, the project aims to stimulate a reflection on the communicative power of art in recounting sacrifice and example, inviting us to rediscover the universal value of these figures as models of inspiration and memory.
