On May 14, 2026, the Ambassador of Japan, Her Excellency Ms. Ono Hikariko, paid a visit, accompanied by Embassy officials Dr. Hiroshi Kubo and Dr. Gloria Ducci.
Welcoming the guests on behalf of the ACS were Superintendent Dr. Gabriele Capone, Dr. Simonetta Ceglie, Head of the Education and Teaching Department, and Dr. Antonio Frate, liaison for meetings with foreign representatives.
The visit took place to mark the 160th anniversary of the first Treaty of Friendship between the Kingdom of Italy and the Empire of Japan, signed in Yeddo (present-day Tokyo) on August 25, 1866.
The highlight of the meeting was the reading and examination of Law No. 4395 of May 24, 1868, preserved at our Institute, which ratifies the aforementioned Treaty, whose Article 1 refers to “perpetual peace and constant friendship.”
The guests appreciated all the places they visited, the workspaces where research is conducted, and the “Scrigno della Memoria” (Chest of Memories), where they admired the Italian Constitution.
The Ambassador recalled that the Japanese cherry trees in our EUR neighborhood (Passeggiata del Giappone) were donated by the city of Tokyo in 1959 as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
