Alberto Pirni (PhD) is Associate Professor in Moral Philosophy at the Institute of Law, Politics and Development by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa), where he coordinates the Research Area in “Ethics and Global Challenges”. He teaches “Public Ethics”, “Ethics and Climate Justice”, “Ethics and Security”, and “Ethics, Technology, and Care Relationships”.
He has been President (2020-2022) of the Paritetical Commission (Professors-Students didactic and services commission) and Vice-President of the Joint Ethical Committee between Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore (2018-2021).
Prof. Pirni is member of the Scientific Board of the PhD Programmes in “Human Rights, Global Politics and Sustainability: Legal and Philosophical Profiles” and in “Health Sciences, Technology and Management”. He is also the Coordinator of the Curriculum 4. “Theories, Institutions and Cultures of Ecological Transition” belonging to the National PhD School in “Sustainable Development and Climate Change”.
Finally, he is Responsible Director of the International Journal “Lexicon of Public Ethics”.
He spent research periods at the Universities of Tübingen and of Freiburg i.Br. (Germany). He was also visiting professor by several universities in Germany, Austria, Spain, Russian Federation, Brazil, Argentine, and Chile (by UN-ECLAC – Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean). At present, he is visiting professor in “Climate Ethics: The Global Challenges and the Role of Individuals” at the University of Graz (Austria), Department of Philosophy and within the Field of Excellence and interdisciplinary research centre “Climate Change Graz”.
Prof. Pirni participated in COP26 (Glasgow) and COP27 (Sharm-El-Sheikh) as an institutional observer and member of the institutional mission coordinated by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies.
He is the author of 5 monographs, 4 co-authored volumes, and over 180 essays in volumes and refereed national and international journals (in 6 languages). He is also the editor and co-editor of more than 25 volumes and monographic issues of scientific journals.
His main research fields involve German Classical Philosophy, public ethics, ethics of technology, ethics and institutions, theories of motivation, theories of (climate, energy and intergenerational) justice.
