Arturo Varvelli

Director of the Rome office and Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

He worked extensively in Libya, the main focus of his studies, dealing with internal and foreign politics and in particular with Italy-Libya relations. His first book, “Italy and the rise of Gaddafi” (2009), focuses on Italian-Libyan relations.
In 2018, he took part in the Brooking Institutions working group on the Libyan crisis.
He worked as Co-Director of the MENA Center and as Director of the Terrorism Program at the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).
He worked on the scientific coordination of the “Rome MED – Mediterranean Dialogues”.
In addition, he was Professor of History and Institutions of the Middle East at the IULM University of Milan and Visiting Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy (EFD).
He has taken part in research projects funded by the Chamber of Deputies and the Italian Senate, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the European Parliament and Commission.
