Chi Onwurah is a Member of Parliament and a British politician who represents the Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West constituency in the House of Commons. She was first elected in 2010 to represent the Newcastle Central constituency. She serves as chair of the House of Commons Committee on Science, Innovation, and Technology. Chi is a qualified electrical engineer and, before entering Parliament, worked for over twenty years on engineering projects around the world. She previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Ofcom. During her time at Ofcom, Chi oversaw the development of the PIA (Physical Infrastructure Access), the regulatory framework that fostered competition and expanded fiber-optic network coverage in the United Kingdom. Born in Wallsend, Chi attended Kenton Comprehensive School in Newcastle, where, at the age of 17, she was elected “deputy” of the school in mock elections.
