Official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. He entered the diplomatic career in 1978, worked from 1980 to 1982 at the Embassy to the Holy See, from 1982 to 1985 at the Embassy in Moscow as First Secretary, from 1985 to 1988 at the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. In 1994 he was Head of the Special Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Office under Prime Minister Berlusconi, and in 1996 Head of the Press Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In June 1996 he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Head of the Press and Information Service and Spokesman of the Minister. On 23 December 1997 he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary. From 2000 to 2004 he was Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2006 he was appointed Ambassador and in 2007 Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also Italian «sherpa» at the G8 summit in L’Aquila in 2009. He was President of Fincantieri. On 22 November 2016, he was elected president of the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI). He is President of Mundys since April 29th, 2022.
