He obtained a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 1991. He worked at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center Laboratories, in Yorktown Heights, NY, USA, from 1991 to 1996. In 1994, at the age of 33, he won the national competition for full professor, and returned to Italy as full professor first at the University of Salerno and then at the “Ca’ Foscari” University of Venice. In 1997 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Max–Planck–Institut fur Informatik, Saarbruecken, Germany. In 1998 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science,  Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong and in 2000 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Columbia University. Since 1998 he has been full professor of information processing systems (sector ING-INF/05) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
