President of the Leonardo Med-Or Foundation, established by the Leonardo company to promote relations with the Mediterranean and the East. He served as Minister of the Interior during the Gentiloni government, from December 12, 2016, to June 1, 2018. He also served as Undersecretary of State to the Prime Minister’s Office, Undersecretary to the Ministry of Defense, and Deputy Minister of the Interior. Elected to the Senate in the 2013 general elections, he was then appointed Undersecretary to the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for intelligence services in the Letta government and subsequently in the Renzi government. In the 2018 general elections, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. He then resigned in 2021 to lead Med-Or. In 2018, he published the essay “Security is Freedom.”
