Italian architect and designer
He graduated in Genoa in 1987 and from 1987 to 1992 worked in Renzo Piano’s studio in Genoa and Paris, as project manager. In 1992, in Paris, he founded MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects, an architecture and design studio which is now based in Bologna and Milan and of which he is also creative director. In 2015 Mario Cucinella founded SOS – School of Sustainability, a school for young newly graduated professionals which aims to provide them with the necessary tools to address environmental issues with an open, holistic and research-driven approach. In 2017 the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities entrusted him with the curatorship of the Italian Pavilion at the 2018 Architecture Biennale, which Cucinella entitled Arcipelago Italia, an exhibition-project dedicated to the internal areas of the country. The importance of his work and continuous commitment, as an architect and educator, on environmental and social issues, have been recognized with the International Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2016) and with the Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects (2017). Mario Cucinella has taught at the universities of Ferrara, Naples, Munich and Nottingham.
The Mario Cucinella Architects studio, which he founded, has created and is currently implementing projects in Europe, China, Africa, the Middle East and South America.
