Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bath. He graduated in Physics at the University of Trieste, he obtained a Master’s degree in Computational Intelligence at the University of London (Royal Holloway), and a PhD in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol. Previously he was a professor at the University of Bristol and at the University of California (Davis). He has published several books and articles on the theory of machine learning, and recently the book “La scorciatoia” published by Il Mulino. His current research concerns on the large-scale analysis of multimedia content (news and social media) using different Artificial Intelligence methods, and the social impact of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. He is the co-author of two well-known books on machine learning, “An Introduction to Support Vector Machines” and “Kernel Methods for Pattern Analysis” and a bioinformatics book “Introduction to Computational Genomics”. He is a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award winner and currently holds a European Research Council advanced grant.
