Nicola Verola

Nicola Verola is Director General of the Directorate General for Europe and International Trade Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).

He entered the diplomatic service in 1994, after a period at the Directorate General for Economic Affairs, and served as First Commercial Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Canberra (1999-2001) and First Secretary and then Counsellor at the Italian Representation to the European Union (2002-2006). From 2006 to 2010, he served in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. After a period of secondment to the US State Department, he served as First Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Italian Embassy in Washington (2010-2014). He subsequently served as Head of the Technical Secretariat of the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council with responsibility for European Affairs (2014-2018) and Secretary of the Interministerial Committee for European Affairs (2016-2018). In 2017, he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary.

He graduated with honours in Political Science from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (1993) and obtained a Diploma in Advanced Studies in Public Administration from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (1998). Since 2015, he has held regular teaching positions at LUISS Guido Carli University, teaching “Models and Techniques of Negotiation in the EU”.
