Nino Cartabellotta, a specialist in gastroenterology and internal medicine, is president of the GIMBE Foundation, which since 1996 has been promoting the integration of the best scientific evidence into all political, managerial, and professional decisions concerning people’s health. An Italian pioneer of Evidence-based Practice (EBP), he is now recognized as one of the most authoritative experts in research and healthcare in Italy, thanks to his cross-disciplinary skills that span all levels of the healthcare system. He is the scientific coordinator of the GIMBE Foundation’s institutional programs: #salviamoSSN, aimed at safeguarding a fair and universal public health service, and GIMBE4young, created to spread the culture of EBP among the healthcare professionals of the future. He oversees the publication of the ‘Report on the National Health Service’ and coordinates the GIMBE Observatory on the NHS for continuous and independent monitoring of the responsibilities and actions of all healthcare stakeholders with the ultimate aim of making good use of public money and protecting citizens’ health. He is the scientific director of GIMBEducation, the training program of the GIMBE Foundation. From 2020 to 2023, he was the scientific director of the GIMBE program for independent monitoring of the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination campaign. Thanks to the media visibility gained during the pandemic, it now brings issues relating to the sustainability crisis of the National Health Service to the attention of the general public, along with the analyses and proposals developed by GIMBE as part of the institutional campaign #SalviamoSSN (Let’s save the NHS).
